FULL NAME: Felicity Deverill
NICKNAMES: Answers to either her first or last name.
AGE/DOB: 16 | 4.20.03 | Taurus
YEAR: Junior
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood (wizard dad, unknown magical creature mom)
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female (she/her/hers)
SEXUALITY: Looking for love in all the wrong placesHOMETOWN: Grew up in aptly named Blands, NC, an unplottable piece of land along Jordan Lake. Boarded at Merrymount Academy, a private Ilvermorny Quodpot feeder school in Quincy, MA, from 6th-8th grade.
APPEARANCE:Nothing fancy. Felicity's dad is a man of simple pleasures and simple taste, and he always bought his daughter simple clothes. This suits Felicity just fine. Given her active, unrelenting lifestyle, she needs clothes that are durable (or cheap). Her more unique pieces of clothing are in her rotating coat collection. Bomber jackets, jean jackets, etc. Cool, oversized thrift store finds that aren't hers and don't fit quite right.
She usually wears her hair down. About once a year she'll cut it to her shoulders and then let it grow back. She'll wear the occasional blush and doesn't own any jewelry. However, she does have a scar from Quodpot on the middle finger of her right hand that resembles a ring. You've seen it. When she flipped you the bird.
HEIGHT: 5'3"
BUILD: Aerodynamic. Lean. Durable.

What would others say is their most prominent personality trait — what's the first thing people notice about them?Someone meeting Felicity for the first time might wonder,
Wait, have we met before? Understandable. Not because she has “one of those faces,” but because Felicity treats everyone like she already knows them. If you try to shake her hand she’ll give you an over-the-top two handed shake with intense eye-contact or just a casual fist-bump because good friends don’t shake hands. By the time you try to introduce yourself, she’s already given you a nickname, so stop looking at her with that confused face. Okay, Admiral? You good, Juice?
Felicity is a confident girl. But she’s most comfortable and at ease when things are casual. Not when they're serious or adult. So she just wants to skip the formalities. Let’s bypass the small talk and get to the good shit. What’s your stance on tickling, Sunshine? Is a zoo just animal slavery, Hutch? You got a good poo your pants story, Babs? Felicity knows that her habit of skipping the ‘getting to know you’ phase and her refusal to even acknowledge that you don’t know each other can make people uncomfortable. And you know what? She’s good with that.
Oh, and someone would also probably notice that Felicity is drinking from a Big Gulp. She’s always drinking from a Big Gulp.
How would this character describe themself? What do they think are their best and worst qualities?Felicity would describe herself as independent... but the truth is she always needs to be surrounded by friends. She’s just an independent girl who
chooses to spend all her time with other independent girls. Okay??? So, fuck you and your claims of ‘hypocrisy.’ She spent most of her childhood without parental supervision and prides herself on her ability to care for herself. She’s a self-sufficient adult. Alright??? But her childhood independence is inextricably tied to a deep feeling of abandonment. These two forces create a powerful tug-of-war inside Felicity.
Leave me alone! Don’t go! I’m fine on my own! Stay! She would also describe herself as “super fucking fun.” (See next question)
Felicity isn’t sure what her worst quality is (maybe that in of itself could be her worst quality), but one thing she doesn’t always like is how easy it is to goad her into things. You say she can’t do something, she’s doing it. You say she shouldn’t do something, she’s definitely doing it too. Part of her wishes she could turn down a challenge or ignore a slight, but she’s simply incapable. When the mood is right, she’ll be defiant and contrary even when it means doing something she doesn’t want to or making a stance she doesn’t agree with.
What drives them to action? Doing good? Getting rich? Receiving praise?A misguided form of hedonism. Felicity believes strongly in doing the things that make you happy. Life is too short to deny yourself things. She lives recklessly, from the dorm to the Quodpot pitch. If she wants something, she goes for it. If it’s fun, she’s the first in line. Her motto is YODO:
You
Only
Die
Once;
so why not make it epic? Her hedonistic drive has only intensified in the last few years since her dad has come out. She hates that he felt a need to be closeted. She thinks everyone should pursue and prioritize their own happiness and she’ll encourages you to do so.
Felicity
is fun. And hopefully being her friend is a lot of fun. But in her pursuit of fun, she doesn't always succeed at making herself happy. She drinks an insane amount of sugary beverages, feels sick, and then keeps doing it day after day. And that’s a pretty apt metaphor for the rest of her decisions: she does everything in the name of fun and happiness, but the sum of her choices leaves her feeling like shit. Most nights she cries before falling asleep. (100% of party nights.) Felicity fundamentally misunderstands what makes her happy -- always chasing that sugary treat instead of a healthy balanced meal -- and does everything in excess.
What is their sense of humor like? Are they chronically unserious? How's their comedic timing? Do they hate potty humor?Felicity totally embraces the weird. She’s down for bits and only likes being serious on
her terms. And she is plenty crass. Felicity swears like a sailor. Her favorite word is ‘twat’ (pronounced to rhyme with ‘hat’).
Is the glass half empty, half full, or something else?First of all, it’s not a glass, it’s a Big Gulp. And whenever it hits empty, it immediately gets refilled with sugary coffee, sports drinks, soda, or alcohol.
How does this character handle tense social situations like arguments/fights?She acts like a brat. An immature brat.
How social are they and, introvert or extrovert, what sorts of people do they gravitate toward?Felicity is definitely an extrovert. And while professing her independence and self-sufficiency, she must surround herself with other people. Ideally it’s with her close friends, either people who are similar to her or people she has
benevolently -- and unilaterally -- decided to “take under her wing.” But when her friends aren’t there, she’ll sidle up to whoever is. Acquaintance or enemy. Better to be arguing with someone she doesn’t like than standing alone in silence.
How do they adapt (or fail to adapt) to change? With less grace than she thinks.
What are their opinions on rules? How do they interact with authority figures?See:
Libertarian. (Even though Felicity rebels against governance and champions autonomy and freedom, she still really does love adult approval.)
How sensitive are they?Oooo she’s sensitive, and she does not do a good job of keeping her feelings in. Felicity will definitely cry. Sometimes in bed and other times to your face. And she’ll keep yelling at you through her tears. She doesn’t feel any shame about it and it’s not going to slow her down.
How does this character handle group project assignments in class? She’ll either be a distraction or make it epic. Sometimes both.
FUN FACTS:
😈 Has a dab for every occasion
😈 Her favorite Quodpot team is the Carolina Wright Bros (yes, the Wright Brothers were wizards)
😈 Had a single, transformative trip to a 7-Eleven
😈 Trained herself to not be ticklish
😈 Her favorite actor is Tom Cruise (known Squib)
😈 Puts a different taunting "bumper sticker" on her broom for every Quodpot match.
LANGUAGES: Fluent in English and dabbles in many non-human languages. She picked up a cursory knowledge of Squatch and Seelie from her ex-stepmom (a crytolinguist and interpreter) and studied Gobbledegook and Flatwood as an independent project/extra credit with Mr. Trullinger during her freshman and sophomore years respectively. This year she's going to start studying Kentaur (a Centaur dialect).
HOBBIES: Reading fantasy novels, eating other people's food when they're not looking, climbing things, being in a posse, burping, pantsing people, stirring up shit, giving and receiving negative peer pressure, yes-and-ing, doing astronomy NOT astrology, being active, staying up too late, befriending critters.
SKILLS:
BROOM SPORTS: Felicity is fast, fearless, coordinated, and cunning. Used to play Quidditch and Quodpot, but now only the latter.
LANGUAGES: A quick study, Felicity has only really devoted herself to learning non-human languages.
WINGWOMANING: She'll hype you up and then hook you up. Her wingwoman style is loud and confident. She makes things happen by being direct, not through inception.
ACTING: She only started acting when she came to Peckenpaugh. She's good at being dramatic, but still needs work portraying quiet, subtle emotion. Fancies herself a leading lady, though.
DRINKING GAMES: Drinking cold liquids quickly? No problem for a girl who hydrates exclusively out of a Big Gulp. Throwing balls at targets? Pshh, she's a gifted Sparrow. Trash talking and celebrating? Come on now.
WORKING THE RESALE MARKET: She's a little entrepreneur. She knows what things are worth and is always trying to buy things off people to resell to the thrift store. She'll also buy things from the thrift store to sell for more money elsewhere.
OUTDOORSY SKILLS: Felicity's dad showed her the ropes. She's is good at identifying animals and plants. And she's an expert tracker, noticing small signs of magical beasts or cryptids.
GETTING OUT OF CHOKEHOLDS: She and Tony did a lot of wrestling growing up. Felicity's natural instinct is FIGHT. But you also gotta be able to FLIGHT when it's time.
RUDIMENTARY ASTROMANCY: Felicity has some star-related divination ability, but it's relatively unrefined. She's able to predict some things, but most of her "readings" only make sense to her in hindsight.
FAMILY:DAD: Joe Deverill
A fucking sweet crytozoologist who was done dirty by the crypto-community. Man can do whatever he wants. You got it?MOM: ???Dunno, probably a cool chick who [...] Don't know and don't care.EX-STEPMOM: Brenda Butts
Brenda is chill. Travels a bunch and whatnot. She's some big deal cryptolinguist or interpreter person. [...] Hope she's doing good. Tony says she is.EX-STEPBROTHER: Tony De WittHe's a senior in Mothgarden. Claims he's only 1/8th giant but it's gotta be more 'cause he's dumb as rocks. [...] Decent Quodpot player, I guess. I don't know. He's annoying, but fine. Whatever. BACKGROUND:Felicity knows very little about her early childhood. Her dad has kept the details of her infancy intentionally vague in a well-meaning attempt to protect her. What Felicity
does know is…
… her dad was a cryptozoologist who traveled the eastern US, living with and researching cryptids and other magical beings.
… her dad was kicked out of his team and shunned by the community for sleeping with a non-human entity.
… she was born 9 months after this “incident.”
What Felicity
doesn’t know is…
… who/what her mom is.
… what her mom thinks of her.
… why her mom didn’t stick around.
By the time Felicity was 3, she had a new mom. Joe married Brenda Butts, who brought along with her a large son, Tony, one year Felicity’s senior. They were a family. But as Brenda -- and later Joe -- spent more and more time working, Felicity and Tony were left to raise themselves. A 7-year-old Felicity and an 8-year-old Tony were told to look out for each other, not get killed, and stay out of trouble. They only got top marks on the middle directive.
Step-siblings with different personalities, Felicity and Tony had a duty not to get along. But given their circumstances, they had no choice but to do everything together. One would begrudgingly ask the other if they wanted to do an activity, the other would begrudgingly agree to it, and then hours later they'd return to their respective rooms muddy, exhausted, and happy.
Over time, their mutual dislike transformed into something more performative than real, although neither has really admitted a fondness for the other. They seem to enjoy the passion with which they annoy each other. Every agreement has to be undercut (e.g. they’d bond over their love of broom sports, but vehemently disagree on who's the best professional team).
These days without adult supervision instilled a strong sense of independence in Felicity.
Sure, she didn’t know her real mom and her parents were often traveling, but none of that mattered! She could take care of herself! Consequently, she doesn't put adults on a pedestal. They’re older and sometimes know more, but Felicity won’t elevate them at the expense of lowering herself. We’re all equals, man.
That’s not to say she had a bad relationship with her parents. She loves her dad and thinks the world of him. He’s kind and patient and warm and patient and patient and patient. He’s
good. And has been treated wrongfully by the world. Felicity is on her best behavior around him, settling for ‘lovingly difficult’ instead of ‘overly difficult.’ He loves her back and thinks she’s a wonderful little witch.
On a deep level, she feels like both she and her dad were cast away. He by his fellow cryptozoologists, and she by her mom. The fingerprints of her absent mother can be seen on Felicity's identity. For one, she has an active interest in cryptids and non-human languages; a semi-intentional attempt to connect with a part of herself she doesn’t fully know. And her sense of abandonment has caused her to be social and to seek out connections. (It’s also made her defiantly proclaim that she’s independent and doesn’t need anyone else!!!)
It should be noted, Felicity had a good relationship with Brenda, who encouraged Felicity’s interest in non-human languages and who treated her like her own daughter. Brenda is good people in Felicity’s book.
It was Big Tom -- Tony’s biological dad -- who had the idea to send the kids to Merrymount Academy in Quincy, Massachusetts. The elite, preparatory school was expensive but he was willing to pay (for both children, if he had to) if it meant his son would have a secured spot at Ilvermorny and, subsequently, a much better shot at a national Quodpot championship.
So, a year after Tony went, Felicity followed him up to Merrymount. Felicity made friends easily. And being on the Quodpot team only further inflated her already-large ego. But even with her friends and fame, she felt out of place. The preparatory school setting was stifling. There was plenty for her to rebel against, and she never turned down an opportunity. Felicity didn't apply to Ilvermorny when the time came. Everyone agreed that her dad's alma mater, Peckenpaugh, would be a better fit.
And it has been. Felicity has thrived the past two years. There’s still
plenty of sanding to be done before this stump of wood resembles a piece of art, but Felicity is in a much better place than before. She likes her friends better here. She’s more comfortable. She got a part-time job and is part-time responsible. And she’s taking advantage of Peckenpaugh’s strong cryptozoology and non-human language programs.
This past summer, Joe and Brenda got divorced when Joe came out as gay. (
Consequently, she and Tony no longer have the same house and aren't technically siblings anymore…) She’s incredibly supportive of her dad and is a little too ready to play wing-daughter for him. But it also makes her sad knowing he’s had to live a closeted life up to this point. That he hasn’t been as happy as he could have been. All of this has caused Felicity to double down on her already overly-hedonistic tendencies.
She’s entering her junior year on a mission:
do everything possible to be happy right now.
WAND: 9", Sycamore, Jobberknoll feather
FAMILIAR: Technically Felicity doesn't have one,
but she is trying to domesticate "
Nitrous" -- her raccoon friend she met on campus last year.
CAREER GOALS: Run a commune for cool people and chill cryptids
ONLY. The goal would be to promote healthy relationships between the two communities. One planet, one life, one love y'all.
PART-TIME JOB: Ice Cream Engineer @ Zippy Dip
CLASSES: CHARMS: Dude, memorization is easy but hella repetitive. Felicity learned to charm a cootie-catcher and hasn't paid much attention since.
POTIONS: Ah, shit. Mixin' and matchin'. Sniffin' concoctions and bubblin' some brews. This class is A-OK in Felicity's book.
TRANSFIGURATIONS: Wtf is up with Ms. Min? She genuinely enjoys this boring stuff. Makes no sense. Felicity spends much of class trying to figure her out.
ASTRONOMY: Okay this class is what's up. Hermes is a dude and stars are some real original magic in Felicity's book. She's super into this class.
CRYPTOZOOLOGY & MAGIZOOLOGY (H): Felicity is down with C&M -- especially field work days. We're all animals, right? Some of us are just hairier than others.
DEFENSE AGAINST DARK ARTS: Took this class on a whim thinking it'd be a lot more dueling. Why isn't there more dueling? Let's do the duel, yeah?
NON-HUMAN LANGUAGES: Ahh yeah. New year, a new non-human language to learn. Now it's officially a class and Felicity is gonna pick up Kentaur. Let's talk about the stars, my horsey-friends.
ANIMAGUS STUDIES: Okay, this one is super hard. But Felicity is taking it seriously. She wants to take an animal form to better connect with the other creatures and cryptids that roam the world. (Raccoon)
EXTRA-CURRICULARS:AV CLUB: Felicity will talk about anything, so put a mic in front of her and let her go. This year she wants to host a show about her favorite fantasy book series.
BOWLING CLUB: Felicity rolls the ball slowly down the lane with both hands. And for those seven seconds or so before the ball reaches the pins, she moon walks for her peers.
DUELLING & WANDWORK:
Finally she gets to do some dueling. Let's goooooo.
FILM CLUB: The first time Felicity saw a movie was in Film Club. Where have these things been all her life?
GAME CLUB: Felicity's sweet-spot is narratives games where she gets to play a character and it doesn't take too long. She's not the patient type.
PERFORMING ARTS CLUB: She brings all the drama, but only a sprinkling of nuance. Fancies herself a leading lady; falls short.
QUODPOT: A Sparrow, Felicity is as fast and as daring as they come. Reckless, but not without wrecks, Felicity has two goals when she gets on a broom: (1) win, (2) scare you.
SORTING?: Felicity almost didn't take Wildgulch door when it opened. Self-programmed to automatically rebel, she nearly picked a different house on principle. But Wildgulch was, and has been, a good fit. She's energetic and impatient. Intense and emotional. Loud and quietly praise hungry. And while she vehemently rejects her impending adulthood, she'd like to someday make a small but meaningful impact on the world (her commune, see above).

QUODPOT
Are you okay with character injuries?: Yes.
Is your character new to the team this year?: No. She's a vet.
Playstyle: A dare devil on a broom. She's fast and reckless. Learning to fly with her much larger brother, she had to develop ways to get around him. A natural scorer, her greatest strengths are her agility and willingness to do what other players won't. She's 115 pounds of adrenaline and sugar. She wants to scare you. She'll play chicken with her opponents, fly where others don't dare, and taunt everyone while doing so. Her confidence and cockiness are her greatest weakness too, however. She takes risks she doesn't need to, sometimes eschewing the simple play for a more complicated one that can backfire.
She likes to win, but even more, she hates to lose. Oh, and she'll commit a foul. Definitely.
